Earth Wind & Fire La elegancia del rhythm and blues

Earth, Wind and Fire como grupo es esencialmente la creación de Maurice White, un "soñador" nacido el 19 de diciembre de 1944 en Memphis, Tennessee. A los seis años ya cantaba en un cuarteto gospel y a los doce, concentrándose en la batería, había participado en varios concursos para nuevos talentos. Estos estupendos días terminaron en 1960, cuando Maurice, que vivía con su abuela, se trasladó a vivir con sus padres a Chicago. Se matricula en la Rooseveltt University e inmediatamente se pasó al conservatorio. En 1963, White actuaba cuatro noches a la semana en el Hungry I Club, mientras de día trabajaba en el estudio de Chess Records.

En Chess Records White aprendió a trabajar en equipo, a componer y a producir. Tocó junto a los artistas Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howling Wolf, Billy Stuart y Etta James. En 1965 Maurice fue invitado por Ramsey Lewis a formar parte de un trío musical. Naturalmente, White aceptó. Grabaron decenas de álbumes y obtuvieron éxitos pop como “Wade in the Water” (1966). Cuando White abandonó el grupo, formó otro llamado The Salty Peppers junto a Don Barry, Louis Satterffield y Don Whiteland.

Tuvieron un discreto éxito en la zona de Chicago, donde actuaban en locales nocturnos. A finales de 1970, The Salty Peppers se separaron y Maurice comenzó a proyectar Earth, Wind and Fire, un nombre ("Tierra, viento y fuego") derivado de su interés por la astrología. La formación original incluía a Maurice, su hermano Verdine (bajo), Michael Beale (guitarra y armónica), Wade Flemmons (voz), Yackov Ben Israel (percusiones, congas), Sherry Scott (voz), Alex Thomas (trombón), Chet Washington (saxo tenor) y Don Whitehead (teclados). La banda fue contratada por Warner Brothers y empezó a grabar en Los Angeles.

Earth, Wind and Fire se reveló como un grupo soul diferente de los demás. Además de alguna tenue conexión con el jazz, debida a Maurice, su música estaba claramente arraigada en el viejo rhythm and blues. Hay una fundamental mezcla de música negra e influencias blancas, evidenciadas en artistas como Santana, Chicago y Ohio Players y enriquecida por la contribución de Miles Davis, Milton Nascimento y Stevie Wonder. Éstas son las raíces de Earth, Wind and Fire, salpicadas por algunas influencias del "flower power", la flilosofía hippie de los años sesenta. ‘Earth, Wind and Fire’, su primer álbum, fue producido por Joe Wissert y publicado en 1971.

Ya desde sus origienes, Earth Wind and Fire se mostró como un grupo muy diferente a los demás. En 1979, salió el álbum “I am”, que contenía la canción “Boogie Wonderland”, uno de los grandes éxitos de la banda. Esta canción, junto con ” September“, entró a formar parte del Top Ten americano. El público adoraba a Earth, Wind and Fire. Gustaba a personas de todas las clases sociales y raciales. En la cima de la popularidad, empezaron a tener problemas… Tras más de quince años sin éxito, Earth Wind and Fire parecía haber perdido su brillo, y permanecieron en silencio durante un largo periodo de tiempo, lo que hizo suponer la separación del grupo. Pero a finales de 1987 aparece ‘Touch the World’, el álbum que devolvió a Earth, Wind and Fire su éxito.
