Nile Rodgers & Chic Llegaron los "llenapistas"

Chic es un grupo musical estadounidense, formado en 1976 por el guitarrista Nile Rodgers, el batería Tony Thompson, y el bajista Bernard Edwards. Consiguieron sus mayores éxitos con canciones de música disco, como "Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)", "Everybody Dance" (1977).  "Le Freak" fue Nº. 1 del Billboard U.S. y Nº. 1 en listas de R&B . "I Want Your Love" (1978), "Good Times" y "My Forbidden Lover" (1979′) tambien alcanzaron el Nº. 1 del Billboard.

Al mismo tiempo, Edwards y Rodgers componían, arreglaban, interpretaban y producían discos muy influyentes de música disco y R&B, tanto para artistas ya establecidos, como para estrellas de un sólo éxito como Sister Sledge, Sheila and B. Devotion, Diana Ross, y Debbie Harry. También ayudaron a lanzar a la fama al joven Luther Vandross, que cantó en uno de los álbumes del grupo.

 

En los ochenta, la banda tuvo que luchar por su difusión y sus ventas, y acabó separándose. Nile Rodgers y Bernard Edwards produjeron discos por separado para una amplia variedad de artistas. Por ejemplo, Nile produjo el álbum de mayor éxito comercial de David Bowie, "Let’s dance". Tambien fue, en gran parte, responsable del éxito de Madonna en 1985 con su álbum "Like a Virgin". A principios de los noventa se reunieron para trabajar en material nuevo. Edwards murió en 1996 en Japón durante una gira. A pesar de esto, Rodgers siguió haciendo giras con nuevos músicos. Thompson falleció en 2003.

Además de definir la música disco, sus música inspiró a otros artistas en la elaboración de su propio sonido. Por ejemplo, The Sugarhill Gang utilizó "Good Times" como base instrumental para su "Rapper’s Delight" (1979), el primer éxito discográfico del hip hop. Y el grupo británico Queen sacó de los típicos riffs de guitarra y bajo de Chic la inspiración para su exitoso single "Another One Bites The Dust". Siempre sabían si sus temas iban a funcionar…porque primero, sin que nadie lo supiese, los pinchaban en la discoteca Studio 54 de Nueva York. Comprobaban el comportamiento de la gente y, dependiendo cuál fuese, lo editaban o no.
